Nick Stefan began training in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu in 1991 inside the Rickson Gracie circle and later expanded his study with the Machado brothers. His formal lineage is under Gracie Humaitá, and he earned his black belt from Rigan Machado in 2006. Nick is a 5th-degree black belt and is approaching his 6th degree — a recognition of decades of training, teaching, and service to the art.
After relocating to San Diego in 2005, Nick founded his first academies under the Gracie Humaitá banner in 2009 (Gracie Humaitá Carlsbad and Gracie Humaitá San Marcos). That same year he won the No Gi World Championship. Over a long competitive career he collected top finishes at major events — Pan-American silver, ADCC bronze during the invite only era, IBJJF Arizona State champion, Copa Pacifica champion, Grapplers Quest champion, OTM Best of the West, and multiple Pan American medals. He compiled a 2–1 professional MMA record before a back injury sidelined him for several years.
As a coach and mentor, Nick has trained and worked alongside elite fighters and athletes — from Travis Browne, Brody Farber and Júnior dos Santos to Cris “Cyborg,” Brandon Vera, Phil Davis, and Demian Maia — and hosted top teams and competitors at his academies. He built two of the largest Jiu-Jitsu programs in North San Diego County and is widely recognized as a pioneer for BJJ in the region. After losing those locations to unforeseen circumstances, Nick rebuilt his program and today leads a network of more than 30 black belts and instructors in the immediate area.
Nick’s teaching blends traditional Gracie and Machado fundamentals with a modern, brain-first approach to learning. He emphasizes body awareness, decision making under pressure, and developing each student’s internal “feel” for technique. A core part of his program is an extensive Instructor Training Course: all high-level students pass through a structured teacher-development pathway designed to build coaching skills, class structure, cueing, and curriculum delivery. Graduates are qualified to teach Stefan Jiu Jitsu Academy classes and receive ongoing mentorship and evaluation. Nick’s focus is simple and relentless: when students improve, the team improves. He continually brings in elite guest instructors and creates training environments where serious students get the partners and instruction they need to advance.
